Story of tele …

To me tele- has always associated with television. I can still remember how bad weather didn’t let me watch MacGyver from Finnish TV or how evening news gathered whole family around the TV set. On the one hand, it was a very nice tradition but on the other, TV schedule is a very annoying invention - when some of your favorite shows begin, you have to sit next to TV set and stare it until first commercial brake. And when you don’t own a recorder (and I don’t) then it’s a bit frustrating.

What could and will change in a near future?

Or maybe it’s better to say that it’s already changed? For a some time now tv.ee has offered TV shows and films for watching them for free (Estonian channels only) and ETV Pluss is concentrated for national television. And world-famous YouTube well known for all anyway. One common feature of all those services is that you can browse and watch your favorite shows when and where ever you want and that is certainly future of televison.

For those, who are more interested in future TV, Joost (formerly known as The Venice Project) is the project to keep eye on.

Viewing needs of the future?

As visual information is the fastest way to receive data (unfourtanately we can’t send information through the eyes efficently yet), we are using it more often we can imagine. Nowadays most of the visual information through the deffirent screens - mobiles, PC-s, TV-s, screens in the supermarkets or in public transport.

It’s quite obviuos that screens are here to stay but there are some aspects that are going to be change:

- Disapearing of physical screens. Holographic projection can be used for simple 2D projection or deep 3D views. Disadvantage of this projection is weak resolution and thats why it still can’t be used for works which requires high resolution screens.
- Wider use of all kinds of video projectors. There are already projectors for mobile devices and that means we can use them everywhere it is needed.

Screens, which are for personal use, like screens of the mobile phones and pocket PC-s, are maintaining their size for a while. Smaller screens are too hard to follow and bigger screens don’t fit to our pockets.

Short feedback for the first lecture:

  • Exam could be blog-based and using references should be allowed.
  • Study blog should be individual because it’s hard to follow and read 10-12 posts per day and some entries may get lost easily. When using individual blogs, everyone can read others blogs. Using RSS all the information is easily accessible.
  • Shared notes should be in wikis if topic will provide that (but not always).

Notes from the beginning of the semester

February 6, 2007

This spring semester started with some nice suprises: IMKE lab is now ready to serve us, there are more than 5 persons in the lectures and first time I registered to course which is actually outside of the building.

Courses which I’m planning to attend are:

  • Locative Technologies
  • Political and Social Issues of Digital Interactive Media
  • Server Side Interactive Technologies
  • Interaktiivse meedia ajalugu
  • Media Project Management
  • Research Methods
  • Contemporary Moments (EKA)
  • + some plans which I would prefer not to be published here
Further review of the courses are coming sometimes in the future, because they started last week and all I have is this very first impression which is certainly not very accurate.
