Tagging and social bookmarking

November 20, 2006

Nowadays, everything is social - if you’re not in a group, you don’t exist. Only issue to he or she is to find a appropriate output and define yourself by that. If you feel yourself more like photo-guy, you will problably choose flickr, blogers will use technorati and so on. In my oppinion we should use all those "tools" to navigate in this very social networking system.

I’ve been using flickr for over a year now but still having maybe 15 or less pictures in there. One reason for that is limited storage, limited bandwidth and limited number of folders. Second debatable argument is fact, that I can’t order my pictures on the paper. Although I can order a book, which is containing my pictures or a DVD with slideshows but that’s not it. Similar photo service, nagi, is offering that kind of service anyway and problably it would be more expencive anyway to order my printouts from U.S.

A reason why I’m holding those 15 or less pictures in flickr, is more like fun side of the service - I can tag my pictures with similar keywords, point the shooting spot on the map (Yahoo! maps), and do some show off too.

Flickr can be slow somedays and picked with commercials, but it’s functions are keeping me there, and not leting me to register to nagi.

Technorati search-engine has been used in my Firefox also for over a year. It has been a great way to read people oppinions about some product before product itself has came to my own hands (camera, for example). Using Technorati is not very comfortable, too often it’s extremely slow and search results are showed it Japanise, although I have set the language to English. Plus ads are represented in searches as well but as all those 4 examples of social programs, without commercials it’s hard to survive.

del.icio.us is having one of the simpliest visual face I’ve seen in nowadays. To me it’s kind of a good thing or positive side. For storing my bookmarks, I don’t need fancy interface or pointless features. As long they are available for me every time I need, it’s working for me. Great side is this exporting/importing feature whiich lets me to add del.icio.us bookmarks to Firefox and vice versa. There are also some ads when you’re using searching feature but as long I’m stick to my Firefox extensions, del.icio.us is completly free of ads in my point of view.

Digg is something I’ve used in past, but not for adding my own news or articles. Feeling that posting there is similar like putting a paper ship to sail on the ocaen - first and the last time I see it is at the moment where I push accept putton. It’s still a great way to read interesting stories, applied by the ordinary people:]

P.S. One interesting note, look at those pictures and realise how similar and boring ads there are about Estonia :]

P.S.S. All these 4 services are available for mobile phone users as well: technorati, flickr, del.icio.us & digg.

Chasing wireless

November 16, 2006

Like Kairit wrote in her blog, we took a small walk yesterday to find out, in which condition wireless connections there are available in the center of the capital.

Instead of taking laptops with us, we used Nokia 770’s to scan wifi networks. Pocket-size computers are much suitable for this, that’s for sure. Full review of networks are available in Kairit’s blog, so I won’t repeat her here.
